Colin played about three games during his NFL debut season. But in week 10 of the 2012 campaign, Alex Smith, the starting quarterback for the 49ers, had a concussion. The person chosen for the position by mentor Jim Harbaugh was Kaepernick. When he made that statement, Kaepernick said, “To me, this is larger than football.” Eric Reid, a safety for his squad, quickly joined him in bending over. Since this 2016 season went on, more NFL players and sportsmen from different sports imitated their behaviour.
Both supporters and detractors of the protests had strong opinions, which made national news. Barack Obama, the president of the United States, was one prominent politician to join in on the debate and backed Kaepernick’s constitutional right to express his opinion. Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for president, criticized the players during a September interview on television for their disrespect for the U.s and advised them to leave the nation.
According to reports, Kaepernick received death threats. Time magazine put a sitting Kaepernick on its cover on October 3 and credited him with starting a national conversation about wealth, pride, and patriotism.
Throughout the 2016 season, Kaepernick persisted in his demonstrations and repeatedly denounced police violence in interviews. He performed well enough on the field to restore his position as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, but the club struggled to a 2-14 record.
When the tournament was done, Kaepernick decided to sign as a free agent with the NFL. He launched a formal grievance against NFL club owners, alleging that they were attempting to keep him out of the league after no team made an offer to sign him. In his complaint, Kaepernick alleged that the owners were acting in retaliation for his support of social justice and equality as well as for raising awareness of the odd institutions that continue to undermine racial justice in the U.s.
Reid, who was also unsigned after moving into free agency, similarly complained to the NFL in May 2018. Kaepernick & Reid resolved their grievance claims with the NFL in February 2019 after reaching agreements. Settlement terms were kept a secret due to confidentiality agreements.
Kaepernick agreed to take part in private practice in Nov. in the presence of executives from across all 32 Nfl players with an eye on a future comeback to the league. Kaepernick unexpectedly changed the scheduled exercise location from an Atlanta Falcons practice facility in Flowery Branches, Georgia to the football pitch of a nearby high school, in part due to concerns about an injury disclaimer he was requested to sign.
Only 8 NFL teams reportedly sent representatives to see the exercise, and no proposals were ever made. Later, Goodell reaffirmed his support for Kaepernick’s return to the NFL and urged teams that find a home for him.
In recognition of his work to combat racial injustice and prejudice, Kaepernick has won many awards, including the Muhammad Ali Legacy Awards from Sports Illustrated (2017) and the Ambassador in Conscience Award from Amnesty International (2017). (2018). Kaepernick and the Disney Company entered into a collaboration agreement in July 2020 to create films and other projects with a social justice theme.
