Sammy is Cuban: 

On the October 2 premiere episode of AEW Dynamite, Jericho said that Guevara looked like a “Spanish god”. Soon, that became his nickname. So, where does the nickname of Spanish God come from? Essentially, Sammy comes from a Cuban-American family and therefore is a good representative of Latinos worldwide.

Sammy debuted in 2013, making him in his seventh year in business. Since his debut in Texas, he has gone through the NWA, PWG, MLW, DDT, AAA and now AEW. Sammy is a native of Texas, so his first steps in wrestling were taken in Reality of Wrestling, Booker T’s company. The WWE Hall of Famer has so much faith in Sammy, that he once said that he saw him as he did, more like a younger version of Eddie Guerrero.

Why was he wearing a panda head?

At first, Sammy went out to the ring dressed as Panda, for a long time the official version was that “he really liked pandas, so he wanted to use something like that in wrestling” but over time that changed, especially when he was interviewed by Jericho In his Podcast, there Sammy said that the main reason was that he wanted to stand out from the rest and that is why he invested a lot of money in that unique piece for his suit.

Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti are very open about their sex life: 

Since the beginning of 2022, it has become official that Tay Conti and Sammy Guevara are dating. Since then we have had nothing but positive updates on how life as a couple is going as they are doing great professionally in AEW. Except for when Sammy Guevara has just lost the TNT Championship at the hands of Scorpio Sky. Leaving that aside, it is clear that the details of their intimate life, their sexual life, their romance is on display. This is thanks to the publications on their social networks. 

The whole NSFW posting began with one of Tay Conti sending haters to kiss her butt, which was defended by her boyfriend Sammy Guevara, who revealed that he did it this morning (he was making a joke, but it sent the public wild).

As you can tell, the fighters are causing a bit of a stir due to their words and also laughing at those who are getting angry, who are not few, as if they had to stick to the behavior of others and could not say what they want because they are supposed to that they should behave in a certain way. Both have been having a good time posting and replying.

Relationship with Tay Conti:

Sammy is certainly in the spotlight these days after he proposed to Pam Nizio, (now his ex), on air in 2021 during an August 2021 episode of AEW Dynamite, where fans saw Sammy pay tribute to his then-girlfriend of eight years, Pam Nizio, saying that she stood by him when he was a Taco Bell employee wrestling in front of seven people.

He then invited Pam into the ring and brandished a different type of ring. “Pam, I’ve often wondered on this trip, what would she do without you?” she told her lifelong love of hers, as she prepared to pop the question. “And I want to make sure I never have to find out.”

Pamela Nizio is a medical professional 3 years his junior. Pam accepted his proposal, but that December, Sammy announced their separation. It is also interesting to note that Pamela Nizio received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Houston.

Funny enough, that didn’t last because Pam Nizio and Sammy Guevara’s breakup was confirmed: “I know so many of you have supported us for a long time and have been very appreciative of it over the years,” reads a statement, signed by Sam and Pam, that the fighter tweeted at the time. “Since everyone has given us so much love and support, we thought we owed it to everyone to let them know that we are no longer in a relationship. We still love each other and want nothing but the best for each other.”

Sammy Guevara has been dating AEW star Tay Conti, who appeared in an NSFW Twitter photo. The two have been dating after appearing in an episode of AEW Dynamite. 

After his rival Dan Lambert mocked Sammy and Tay by kissing the TNT title, Sammy made a lewd comment about what he and Tay did while the belt was his. “Hello dan!” he said. “I know we’ve been living for free in your head ever since you got here. But if you knew what Tay and I did while wearing that belt, then you’d know we’re living in your mouth now too!

After that episode, Tay shared a photo of her and Sammy snuggled up on a bed, seemingly naked, with the same belt around their waists. “Enjoy your time cleaning up the title,” Tay wrote on Twitter as she posted the photo.

And certainly, we can only be happy for both of them, that they are doing so well, and wish them to continue like this. Meanwhile, if Guevara regains the title soon we will also see how the couple’s career evolves as Conti gets closer to the TBS Championship and the AEW Women’s World Championship.

In 2022, Sammy Guevara left Inner Circle:

The Inner Circle is one of the earliest factions on All Elite Wrestling’s programming and at one point, they were the biggest thing. 

However, cracks within the group have recently started showing. Not only will Santana and Ortiz be facing Chris Jericho and Jake Hager, but former LAX members blamed Chris Jericho for not allowing them to unleash his full potential. So it is not surprising that Sammy Guevara left the Inner Circle on a recent episode of AEW Dynamite. His stablemate Ortiz stated that although things are getting out of control, he does not blame the Spanish wrestler for what he did . 

Speaking with Chase McCabe, Ortiz shared his thoughts on Sammy Guevara leaving:

“Well, he cleaned up a little bit, cleaned his hands of the situation and stepped back and allowed us to deal with it. Mano-e-mano for lack of a better term. Yeah, I mean I don’t blame Sammy, I get to where he is at. This is a bit out of control and ridiculous, and we’re a bit fed up with Chris’s attitude lately. He has been very self-centered and yes. Not going out on a test too much, but yeah, Sammy just doesn’t want anything to do with it and he couldn’t blame him if he was in his place. I would do the same and focus on the TNT title.

Sammy Guevara recently faced Darby Allin on AEW Dynamite: 

The latest to challenge Sammy Guevara for the TNT Championship on AEW Dynamite was Darby Allin. 

This fight between these two of AEW’s four mainstays would be one of the most exciting matchups in recent memory and could turn out to be one of the best in 2022 so far. Other matches have been announced for Dynamite. Lee Moriarty will take on Bryan Danielson, while Thunder Rosa will take on Mercedes Martinez in a No DQ match a week after the former WWE star attacked (with a lead pipe) the former NWA Women’s Champion in a scary moment.

Controversies:

Suspended after comment of wanting to “rape” Sasha Banks:

Back in 2020, All Elite Wrestling (AWE) wrestler Sammy Guevara was suspended Monday after audio on a podcast from 2016’s “Raw’s 4th Hour” resurfaced and the Cuban-American apologized directly to the WWE wrestler after audio from a 2016 podcast resurfaced. Guevara’s comments resurfaced amid a recent string of sexual misconduct allegations in the American wrestling industry.

During the conversation on the show, the Cuban-American pointed out that he had seen WWE star Mercedes Varnado, who is known as Sasha Banks, at an event in Texas and that he wanted to “rape that woman”. 

“Brother, Sasha Banks, oh my God,” Guevara expressed himself in the 2016 audio. “When I was at the WWE event the other week, I just wanted to go [explicit] rape that woman.”

The 26-year-old fighter accepted having made inappropriate comments and his mistake on his social networks in 2020, saying: 

“I have made stupid, inappropriate and extremely offensive comments in my past,” Guevara said on his Twitter account. “In my idiotic mind, I thought I was being funny by using words and terms that represent nothing but horror and pain. I am truly sorry for my hurtful words and actions, and I will never forgive myself.”

For his part, Banks said Guevara contacted her and apologized directly:

“He apologized and we had an open conversation,” Banks wrote on Twitter after Sammy’s apology. “Words like the comments she made, jokingly or not, have absolutely no place in our society! I do not condone or tolerate this type of behavior. What one thinks is just a side comment can have a massive impact on someone else’s life and can send the wrong message. We have to take responsibility for our actions and the words we say, and I hope this situation shows that. I hope that from now on, for growth and change to take place within our community, we can all continue to have these conversations. No person, man, woman or child, should be subjected to a feeling of fear, or to any unsafe environment. We all have to do better not only for ourselves”. 

After the conversation, Guevara said he had “learned a lesson.”

He was in Lucha Underground between 2018–2019:

In the universe called Lucha Underground, there was also a Sammy Guevara, something rare since we always see fighters with other names. One of the most entertaining matches he had in the show’s fourth season was against Jake Strong, better known as Jake Hager, his partner in the Inner Circle. Guevara made his world debut in the AAA Lucha Libre at Verano de Escandalo 2018. He won the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship at the annual Triplemanía XXVI event in August before losing it to Laredo Kid on February 16, 2019. At Triplemanía XXVII, Guevara teamed with Scarlett Bordeaux in a match for the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship, where they were unsuccessful.

He had a Tryout in WWE: 

Sammy is another of the great talents that escaped WWE, during his third year as a professional he participated in a Tryout/Dark Match on Smackdown, fought alongside Laredo Kid and lost against the Matadors.

Here’s how he began and concluded his career at All Elite Wrestling (AEW): 

Guevara was announced to have signed with the newly formed All Elite Wrestling (AEW) during the promotion’s inaugural event, Double or Nothing in 2019. 

One month after premiering, Guevara was defeated by Kip Sabian. At Fight for the Fallen on July 13, Guevara paired up with MJF and Shawn Spears to defeat Darby Allin, Joey Janela, and Jimmy Havoc in a six-man tag team match.

On the October 2 premiere episode of AEW Dynamite, Guevara transformed himself into a villainous character as he aided AEW World Champion Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Santana, and Ortiz in the attack on Cody and The Young Bucks, creating a group which would become known as “The Inner Circle” (which he has left as of 2022). 

Then Guevara would begin a feud with Darby Allin lasting until 2020, all the while helping Jericho in his rivalries and championship defenses. At the February 29, 2020 Revolution, Guevara was defeated by Allin. He was again defeated by Allin in the first round of the inaugural AEW TNT Championship tournament the following month. At Double or Nothing, The Inner Circle faced Matt Hardy and The Elite (Adam Page, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks) in a Stadium Stampede match, but lost. 

AEW suspended Sammy in June 2020 after an earlier comment about WWE wrestler Sasha Banks resurfaced. Speaking on Raw’s 4th Hour podcast in a 2016 episode, Sammy said that she wanted to “go rape” Sasha when they crossed paths at a WWE tryout, according to Sports Illustrated.

In a statement regarding Sammy’s suspension, AEW said it “condemn[s] Sammy Guevara’s extremely offensive and hurtful words” and that the Houston native “has agreed to undergo extensive sensitivity training.”

Sammy also apologized at the time, writing, “I have made stupid, inappropriate and extremely offensive comments in the past. In my idiotic mind, I thought I was being funny by using words and terms that represent nothing but horror and pain. I am truly sorry for my hurtful words and actions, and I will never forgive myself.”

Banks and Guevara had been in contact with each other, so he had apologized to her, and that they had started an “open discussion” to help him understand the gravity of his comment.

The conditions of his suspension are that he will be required to participate in sensitivity training, while his weekly salary will be donated to the Jacksonville Women’s Center during the course of his suspension. Guevara returned on the July 22 episode of Dynamite, disguised as Serpentico, interfering to help Jericho and Hager defeat Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus in a tag team match.
